On December 31, 1862, African Americans gathered across the country in prayer and anticipation, waiting for the Emancipation Proclamation to take effect at midnight. That historic night became known as Freedom’s Eve and gave birth to the tradition of Watch Night services, still observed today. Join the Gullah Geechee Corridor and the IAAM at Morris Brown AME Church on Tuesday, December 31st, for our Freedom’s Eve Midday Watch Service as we carry forward that legacy. We will pause to give thanks, seek renewal, and prepare to enter the New Year with faith and hope. Together, we will honor the memory of emancipation, celebrate the blessings of the present, and embrace the promise of the future.
Volunteers will assist with wayfinding, registration, and seating.
