Once a beacon of self-reliance with nearly 60 thriving businesses, the community began to decline following the 1990s closure of the Charleston Naval Base and Shipyard. Today, Liberty Hill faces challenges such as vacant lots, shuttered storefronts, and aging homes all in need of repair.
